Stuck Pipe and Fishing Operations

This Stuck Pipe and Fishing Operations training will cover a practical review of the causes of stuck pipe and the techniques that can be employed to avoid such problems. Participants will learn about investigation techniques covering the operation, selection, and use of fishing tools, including decision making methods.

The training has been designed to educate the participants with the main focus of how to prevent fishing jobs, however, if it does occur, what operations and techniques are available to recover the fish or how to sidetrack the well for well bore recovery.

This training will be to teach participants how to do preventative actions and good practices to avoid Stuck Pipe incidents, familiar with warning signs that could lead to Stuck Pipe, know the first actions for freeing pipe, understand the parameters which affects Hole Cleaning, learn how to listen to the well.

At the same time, this training could be the opportunity to exchange experience with colleagues regarding Stuck Pipe, learn recommended practices for various types of wells, Fishing & Jaring Operation, and it will lead to minimize the occurrence/frequency and cost impact of Stuck Pipe incidents

Agenda

Day 1
Introduction to Stuck Pipe Environment

  • Introduction to Stuck Pipe
  • Stuck pipe statistic
  • Geomechanics Well bore Instability and

On the first day, participants will learn about the stuck pipe problems and their huge impact on the economic and feasibility of drilling projects. The day will move forward with a detailed discussion on Wellbore Instability as one of the major factors cause of stuck pipe incidents.

Mechanisms for Stuck Pipe

  • Solids Induce Pack Off Sticking
  • Differential Pressure Sticking
  • Geometry Sticking Wellbore Mechanical and

Participants will learn about the three basic mechanisms causing stuck pipe incidents and analyze in detail conditions for the occurrence of each one, the warning signs and their prevention. Theory will be combined with practical exercises on identification of Stuck Pipe conditions, and group discussion of selected case histories of real stuck pipe events.

Day 2
Stuck Pipe Prevention and Identification

  • Hole Cleaning
  • Torque and Drag
  • Drilling Parameters and warning signs
  • First Action
  • Recommended Practices

Day three will focus on the prevention and correct identification of the stuck pipe mechanism, and implementation of the first actions to get the drill string free. At the end of the day, the seminar will bring a detailed discussion of the recommended practices for stuck pipe prevention. Again, theory will be combined with relate exercises and group discussion of real case histories of stuck pipe incidents.

Stuck Pipe Prevention Techniques and Tools

  • Well Engineering and Offset Well Analysis
  • Free Point and Back Off
  • Fishing and Jar Operations

On day four, participants will learn to identification of relevant offset wells and review from well engineering point of view. Continue with Stuck Pipe Recovery through the implementation of fishing procedures, starting with analysis of string separation options and following with the discussion of fishing economics and decision making tools. Participants will also learn about the selection, installation, and operation of the Drilling Jar to help in the liberation of stuck pipe. All topics will be illustrated and reinforced through the execution of class exercises and group discussion of real case histories.

Day 3
Plug Back and Side Tracking

  • Setting Cement Plugs for Side Tracking
  • Side Tracking Operational Procedures

Participants will learn how to design and set cement plugs for wellbore deviation for sidetrack. Specific topics will be covered such as; tools, procedures for sidetracking in cased and open hole and group exercises from real case scenarios.
