The Role of Sedimentology in Hydrocarbon Exploration

Sedimentary rock, which is composed of other debris in a variety of sizes - from clay, sand, until boulders - from the weathering process of the other rocks as well as the accumulation of organisms and chemical processes in the Earth's surface, is one of the important rock types for natural resources.

Sedimentary rocks are found in various places, covering 73% of the Earth's surface, causing almost all of the hydrocarbons discovery are found in the sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks are the major contributors in the petroleum system. They contains organic material that producing hydrocarbons (source rocks), They have a cavity pore to store hydrocarbons (reservoir rocks), they are also setting up a trap so that hydrocarbons are trapped (trap) and sealing it to avoid seeping to the surface (seal).

The Role of Sedimentology in Hydrocarbon Exploration Training offers a mastery of 3 main things related to the sedimentology which are needed in the hydrocarbon exploration, (i) object: sediment types and sources, (ii) process: transportation, deposition and the formation of sedimentary structure as well as the diagenesis which are controling the hydrocarbon formation, (iii) environment: the part of the earth surface in which sedimentary rocks are deposited and formed and controlling the sedimentary rock character and distribution.

During the course, participants will also learn how to observe and identify the sedimentary rocks and structures, how to interpret the process and sedimentation environment and how to apply them in the petroleum analysis system.
