Petroleum Geochemistry For Exploration Geoscientist
The primary objective is to provide the participants with the basics of petroleum geochemistry analysis, to be focused on the familiarity with the different geochemical techniques and the interpretation of their specific results, in order to best evaluate from the petroleum potential of sedimentary basins, the hydrocarbon migration pathways (at a basin or field scale) to biodegradation.
A. Geology Course/Petroleum Geology
3 days

Classroom
DAY 1
- Concept of petroleum geochemistry (including source rock, petroleum generation and composition, migration, alteration)
- Basics of geochemical analysis and applications for basin analysis
DAY 2
- Concept of standard analytical tools (sample preparation and OBM removal, TOC, REP, organic petrography, hydrocarbon composition, fingerprinting, biomarkers and stable isotopes) and sample preservation, including interpretive pitfalls
DAY 3
- Source rock richness and quality including their kinetics
- Maturity tools and data interpretation
- Geochemical techniques used for elemental composition analysis, e.g. GC, GC-MS, IR-MS, and GC IR-MS (CSIA), including interpretive pitfalls
DAY 4
- Application of biomarkers and isotopes for source rocks and hydrocarbon fluids evaluation
- Oil-oil and oil-source rock correlations
- Thermal maturity, fractionation, biodegradation, and other reservoir processes
